Thanks to an awesome coworker who lovingly raised a group of Rhode Island Red hens, and the old Bulgarian who built a salvageable coop in my backyard years ago, I'm pleased to announce the arrival of these four little ladies. Welcome to the Family
Thanks to an awesome coworker who lovingly raised a group of Rhode Island Red hens, and the old Bulgarian who built a salvageable coop in my backyard years ago, I'm pleased to announce the arrival of these four little ladies. After being hand raised around young kids for two months they couldn't be friendlier or easier to handle. We'll see how this goes . . . .

Wow, that is beyond awesome and they are beauties.
I have been encouraging my sister and BIL to put up a hen house and get a few chickens. Eggs here are SO expensive, especially farm eggs. After paying $7.50 USD for a dozen farm eggs I REALLY encouraged them to get their own chickens!
My BIL would like it if his company would allow him to work PT so he can spend more time painting. I pointed out that he could paint, raise chickens and sell eggs and make a tidy profit!
I'm eager to see how it goes for you and to share in the bounty.
Diane, I don't think it takes too much time/effort. My only experience w/ Swiss eggs was in Lauterbrunnen. Bought six beautiful eggs, cracked them into a pan, got nine yolks. Not sure on the cost as it was a while ago, but no complaints re the quality.

Did you give them names?
Carbon footprint is even less since I live in a neighborhood with a rich history of cock fighting, including the requisite feed store right down the street (and the feed comes from Sandusky). My request for organic feed was met with an odd stare.
Lucy, I was going with John, Paul, Ringo, and George, but for now they are nameless. Loved, but nameless.
Dude....I totally want to have chickens in my yard. I don;t know if you are allowed in Cleveland Heights though.

Spaz, if you've got a yard I'd just get them and build a small coop. They're not loud (hens), especially with other birds around. It's all about the neighbors . . . . and what's the worst that could happen--an extra coop for craig's list and a chicken dinner? And thanks, I like them too.
